Frosted Film installation Grays

Frosted Film installation Grays

Location: Grays, Essex.

Customers Pain Points: Customer wanted more privacy for their bathroom without sacrificing aesthetic.

Solution: Opal Frosted Film

The brief: modern, open-plan… but still private

This project took place at a beautifully styled residential property in Grays, Essex. We were brought in on behalf of TUMC LTD, an interior design company who specialise in modern builds and renovations.

The house had been designed with a clean, open-plan, contemporary feel. Think:

  • Gold accents
  • Marble finishes
  • Large glass panels
  • Statement glazing features

The bathrooms were no exception. Glass doors were used to maintain flow and light throughout the space, being integrated into the master bedroom seamlessly. Visually, it looked incredible.

But there was one obvious issue.

While the aesthetic was modern and luxurious, the practicality wasn’t quite there yet. The homeowners wanted more privacy when using the shower and toilet areas. The clear glazing looked stunning — but it didn’t offer the discretion needed for day-to-day living.

They of course didn’t want to change the glass, and also wanted to match the luxurious finish across the home.

Why Opal Frosted Privacy Film was the right choice

After consulting with the client, we immediately landed on Meta Mark opal frosted Film.

This type of frosted film:

  • Creates an opaque, sandblasted-glass appearance
  • Allows natural light to pass through
  • Provides consistent privacy day and night

Unlike reflective or mirrored films, Opal Frosted Film works 24/7. There’s no reliance on lighting conditions. It simply obscures visibility by blurring vision.

This is our most popular Frosted Film because of both it’s affordability and aesthetic, it’s not as expensive as something like an etched Film, but it still looks great when used in the right places.

Once installed correctly, frosted film often looks indistinguishable from factory-frosted glass — and that’s exactly what the company and customer wanted. A seamless finish that felt intentional, not retrofitted.

The installation challenges

On paper, this sounded like a straightforward installation

In reality, it turned into one of those jobs where attention to detail makes all the difference.

Attempt one: fitting the door upright

Initially, we attempted to install the Opal Frosted Film while the bathroom door was still hung in position.

However, because of:

  • The hinges being raised and on the surface
  • Tight working angles

The finish wasn’t up to our standard.

Leaving the door on seemed like the most efficient option, but in reality we spent lots of time trying to get the film to sit round the hinges evenly, which just left us with a subpar end product.

It’s easy in this industry to “make do” and move on. But that’s not how we operate. If it’s not right, it’s not right.

So we made the call to remove the door entirely.

Removing and fitting the door on the floor

Once removed from its hinges, the glass door was carefully laid flat onto a dustsheet. This allowed us to apply the film to a totally flat surface, cutting round the holes and hinges.

Sometimes I find fitting Film horizontally to be a pane (do you get it ;), as the water doesn’t always travel off the glass as you would desire.

However, the door came out looking great, we gave the Film some time to cure, then placed it back on its hinges and fitted the handle

The result immediately looked sharper, cleaner, and more consistent.

The shower door: even more complex

If the main door was heavy, the shower door was on another level.

It was:

  • Significantly heavier
  • More intricate in its composition

Removing it required extreme care. Shower enclosures aren’t forgiving — one wrong move and you’re dealing with expensive damage.

The process involved:

  1. Carefully removing any fittings
  2. Removing the door without catching anything
  3. Laying it flat in a safe working area
  4. Installing the Opal Frosted Film
  5. Allowing the film to begin curing
  6. Reinstalling the door precisely as it was

Because of the weight and structure, two installers were required to safely manage the process.

This wasn’t a quick in-and-out job. It required patience and coordination, certain parts couldn’t be immediately replaced as it could potentially lift the film.

We made sure to leave an appropriate gap from the bottom also, to ensure moisture from use of the shower didn’t eventually lift the Film.

With Window Film, it is essential with projects like this especially that the film is installed properly. Lifting edges can help introduce more moisture, potentially leading to failure sooner than expected.

Using a dust sheet when installing horizontally

When installing Window Film to a unit that is placed on a flat surface, we always use a dust sheet.

Placing a dust sheet under the unit ensures the customers surfaces are protected, also it mitigates contamination sticking to glass, which can lead to trapped hairs and dust under the Film.

We’ve made the mistake of not doing this in the past, it simply leads to wasted Film and effort.

The final result

Once both doors were reinstalled and aligned, the transformation was immediate.

The bathroom retained:

  • Its light, open-plan feel
  • The reflective gold and marble aesthetic
  • The strong architectural glass presence

But now it also had:

  • Full shower privacy
  • Discreet toilet privacy
  • A soft, modern opaque finish
  • A consistent, high-end appearance

The Opal Frosted Film gave the glass that smooth, contemporary look — almost like acid-etched glazing.

It didn’t feel like an afterthought.
It felt like it was always meant to be there.

The interior designer was extremely pleased with the finish, and the homeowner finally had a bathroom that looked beautiful and functioned properly.

Why privacy film made more sense than replacing the glass

In situations like this, there are typically two options:

  1. Remove and replace all glazing with factory-frosted glass
  2. Apply high-quality privacy film

Replacing glass would have meant:

  • Higher costs
  • Longer waiting times

By choosing privacy film installation instead, the client achieved:

  • Immediate results
  • A fraction of the replacement cost
  • No major construction disruption
  • The same visual outcome

Durability and warranty

Frosted films like this are covered by a 3-4 year manufacturer-backed warranty, although in most residential settings they last much longer when cared for correctly.

Once fully cured, the film:

  • Is moisture resistant
  • Easy to clean
  • Highly durable in everyday use
  • Stable in bathroom environments

We also provided aftercare advice, including:

  • When it’s safe to clean
  • What products to avoid
  • How long the curing period takes

As with all Window Film, slight haziness or moisture can appear initially — this clears naturally as the adhesive settles.
