Frosted Film Installation Rotherhithe

Forsted Film installation to an awning in Rotherhithe, London.

Location: Rotherhithe, London

Customer pain point: An awning was meant to be installed with frosted glass, but mistakes were made…

Solution: Silver Etch Frosted Film

The problem: it should’ve been frosted from day one

This job took place in Rotherhithe, London, at a residential property where the customer had just recently had an awning installed.

The plan was simple. The awning was supposed to be finished off using frosted glass, giving the customer privacy and a clean, modern look. It was meant to be one of those final touches that makes the whole job feel complete.

But somewhere along the line, mistakes were made.

Instead of frosted glazing, clear panels were installed. That might not sound like a huge deal to some people, but in reality it completely changed how the space felt. What should’ve been private now felt exposed, especially during the daytime.

The awning company didn’t want to have new glass ordered and replaced, which would be costly and wasteful. And the customer just wanted the space to look how it was supposed to in the first place, as quickly as possible. They had gatherings arranged for the following weekend, so the clock was ticking

That’s where our Silver Etch Frosted Film came to save the day.

Initial consultation and assessment

When we arrived in Rotherhithe, the first step was understanding exactly what the customer wanted to achieve.

We looked at:

  • what parts of the awning glazing needed frosting
  • how much privacy was required
  • whether the frosting needed to be full coverage or partial
  • the condition of the existing glass
  • how visible the area was from neighbouring properties and nearby walkways

In London, especially areas like Rotherhithe, properties are often small and terraced. The decking on which the awning was placed was raised, meaning neighbours could see directly into the awning over their fence. What was supposed to be awning, now felt like a showroom.

Choosing the right solution

The customer wanted a sandblasted appearance, so after a bit of back and forth, we eventually agreed on our Silver Etch Frosted Film.

Silver Etch, despite being slightly more expensive than our other Frosted Films, creates an amazing metallic like appearance that many customers find aesthetically pleasing.

In most cases, once Frosted Film is fitted properly, people assume the glass itself has been frosted — which is exactly what the customer wanted here.

The installation process

On the day of installation, we arrived as scheduled and prepared the glazing for the Film.

The process involved:

  • cleaning the glass thoroughly removing any dirt, contamination, and marks
  • checking the edges and trims for anything that could cause trouble
  • measuring each panel precisely
  • applying the Silver Etch Frosted Film safely and at a swift pace

With Frosted Film or any Window Film, preparation is key. If the glass isn’t spotless, it can show under the Film, especially when light hits it.

Once the Film was applied, we carefully trimmed it to fit neatly inside the glass, leaving a clean finish with straight edges. The gasket that ran down the middle meant we had to trim it with a ruler, which required full attention and precision when using.

Even though it was a fairly small job being 2 windows, the sheer size and shape of the windows made it a bit of a task for 2 people. However, the installers took their time, leaving the job clean, tidy and professional like we always do

The Customer

Their reaction was priceless…

The customer was over the moon with how the Film looked, and functioned. During the consultation period, the customer had only seen pictures of previous installations, therefore seeing it in the flesh is always likely to produce a totally unique appearance.

When a Film is installed to glass, it can vary in aesthetic depending on the location, glazing size, as well as glazing type. We will always discuss this with the customer fully, occasionally sending samples to give them a more realistic example.

The customer was relieved when they saw the final product, the problems they had with the awning company originally had now been totally forgotten. The awning now felt and looked how it was always meant to.

We are not cowboys

We understand that some companies work and operate differently to us, which is totally fine. However, this doesn’t mean that we will follow suit. Here at AWTUK our main priority is always the customer, from quotation all the way through to completion we will always do what’s best for you.

Our jobs are always left tidy and to a professional standard. No bubbles, creases or contamination will be left under the Film. Any circumstantial events that are out of our control, you will always be notified of.

Our job is not to get the job done, take the money, and run away. Our job is to build a network of long lasting relationships, that slowly spread and prosper well into the future.

Aftercare and expectations

After installation, we explained what to expect over the next few days.

It’s normal for:

  • small water bubbles to appear
  • a haziness to form across the Film

This clears naturally over time.

We also gave the customer basic aftercare advice, including:

  • when it’s safe to clean the glass
  • what cleaning products to avoid using on the Film
  • how to keep it looking clean and maximise longevity

Once cured, Silver Etch Frosted Film is very low maintenance and holds up well in everyday use.
